Trail Meals & Hydration Rules
What to eat for stamina and altitude safety on the Khumbu trail
Dhal Bhat Power
Rice, lentil soup, seasonal vegetables, and spinach. Free refills standard at every teahouse — best calorie-to-cost ratio on the trail.
Garlic Soup
Clear garlic broth served piping hot. Trekkers and guides drink this daily above Namche to help circulation and warmth at altitude.
Boiled & Fried Potatoes
Dense carb source with yak cheese or chili paste. Available at every lodge from Phakding to Gorak Shep.
Tibetan Bread & Honey
Deep-fried puffed flatbread with local honey. Hearty breakfast before early summit pushes to Kala Patthar or EBC.
Sherpa Stew (Shyakpa)
Thick hand-pulled noodle soup with vegetables and sometimes yak meat at lower elevations. Warming and filling.
Boiled Eggs
Reliable protein available every morning. Order the night before at busy lodges in Namche and Dingboche.
Boiled Water Bottles
Buy boiled water (Rs 150–400/liter depending on elevation) at dinner. Keep the Nalgene inside your sleeping bag overnight — it stays warm and prevents freezing.
Ginger Lemon Honey Tea
Standard trail drink. Cuts the dry Khumbu cough and stays hot in an insulated thermos for hours.
Electrolyte Packs
Add one sachet to 1L daily, especially on ascent days to Namche, Dingboche, and Lobuche. Replaces salts lost on steep stone stairs.
Water Purification Drops
Use Aquatabs or chlorine dioxide tablets for tap water at lodges. Wait the full 30 minutes — cold water slows chemical reaction.
Vegetarian Focus
Veg dhal bhat and veg thukpa are the freshest meals above 3,500m. Meat is carried up on foot for days without refrigeration.
Naturally Gluten-Free
Plain rice, boiled potatoes, buckwheat pancakes (champa), and corn porridge are safe gluten-free staples at every teahouse.
Black Chiya Option
Ask for 'Kalo Chiya' (black tea, no milk) to avoid powdered dairy. Fresh milk is rare above Namche; most lodges use powdered.
Lodge Kitchen Flexibility
Cooks adjust spice and salt if you ask before 5:00 PM. At busy peaks, they cannot customize during dinner rush.
No Meat Above 3,500m
Yak and chicken are transported on porter backs for 4–6 days from Lukha. No cold chain. Stick to vegetarian above Tengboche.
No Alcohol at High Camp
Alcohol accelerates dehydration and masks early AMS symptoms. Save the celebratory beer for Lukla return.
Never Drink Untreated Water
Village taps and glacial streams carry giardia and bacteria. Always purify or buy boiled — even at Namche's 'filtered' stations.
Skip Raw Salads
Washed in untreated water. Order stir-fried or steamed vegetables only — they come off the same stove as your soup.
Trip Preparation & Rules
Paperwork, flight baggage limits, and cash guidelines for the Khumbu
Passport & Tourist Visa
Passport valid 6+ months beyond entry. Get 30-day visa ($50 USD cash) on arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport.
Helicopter Evacuation Insurance
Policy must explicitly cover high-altitude rescue up to 6,000m+. Carry digital and printed copy with emergency contact numbers.
Passport Photos
Bring 4 printed passport photos (35×45mm) for Sagarmatha National Park permit, Khumbu municipality fee, and Ncell/Ntc SIM registration in Namche.
Trekking Agency Agreement
If hiring guide/porter through agency, carry signed contract showing guide license number, daily wages, insurance coverage, and evacuation terms.
Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Permit
Local rural municipality entry permit (NPR 3,000) obtained upon arrival in Lukla or Monjo. Note: TIMS cards are not required or valid in the Khumbu region.
Sagarmatha National Park Permit
Mandatory national park entry permit (NPR 3,000 + 13% VAT = NPR 3,390) obtained in Kathmandu at the Tourism Board or directly at the Monjo park entrance.
Licensed Guide Requirement
Under Nepal Tourism Board regulations, foreign trekkers must trek with a licensed government guide for safety and environmental sustainability.
Strict 15kg Weight Limit
Lukla flights enforce 10kg checked duffel + 5kg hand pack. Excess costs $1–2/kg. Weigh bags at Kathmandu domestic terminal before check-in.
Ramechhap/Manthali Diversion
Peak season (Mar–May, Oct–Nov): flights operate from Ramechhap (4–5hr drive from Kathmandu). Book 2:00 AM departure from Thamel to catch first flight wave.
Book Early & Confirm Daily
Lukla seats sell out weeks ahead. Reconfirm flight status each evening — weather cancellations are routine. Keep airline hotline saved.
Carry Nepalese Rupees in Small Denominations
Bring Rs 4,000–5,000 per trekking day. Higher villages (Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep) charge premium for everything. Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes preferred.
ATM Reality Check
Last reliable ATM is Namche Bazaar (often out of cash or offline). No ATMs above Namche. Withdraw enough in Kathmandu or Namche for entire return leg.
Card Payments Rare Above Namche
Most teahouses above Namche are cash-only. Few accept cards with 3–5% surcharge and unreliable connectivity. Budget cash for showers, Wi-Fi, charging, snacks, tips.

Power, Connectivity & Showers
Realistic day-to-day guide for charging, phones, and hygiene
Device Charging
Teahouses charge per device or power bank, ranging from 300 to 600 NPR per hour. Bring a high-capacity power bank and keep electronics warm inside your sleeping bag to preserve battery life.
Mobile Connectivity
NTC and Ncell networks provide mobile data up to Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, but signals drop off in shadowed valley gorges. Local Everest Link Wi-Fi prepaid cards offer intermittent connection in select lodges.
Hot Showers
Hot water runs on bottled gas or solar power, costing between 400 and 700 NPR per use. Above Phortse and Pangboche, freezing night temperatures make wet wipes a safer, more practical alternative.
Drinking Water
Single-use plastic bottles are banned in the Sagarmatha National Park. Fill your bottles from tap sources and treat the water with chlorine dioxide or iodine tablets, or buy boiled water at teahouses.
Altitude Safety & Health
How to handle altitude symptoms and emergency protocols
Daily Symptom Monitoring
Watch closely for early acute mountain sickness signs: a throbbing headache that ibuprofen does not touch, loss of appetite, persistent nausea, and severe insomnia.
Field Hydration Strategy
Count hot lemon, black tea, and garlic soup toward the daily four-litre hydration target. Drink before feeling thirsty to prevent silent dehydration.
Helicopter Evacuation Insurance
Ensure insurance policies explicitly cover emergency helicopter rescue and medical evacuation up to 6,000 meters before starting the trek.
Critical Descent Protocol
If severe symptoms like ataxia, confusion, or a wet gurgling cough develop, dropping 500 to 1,000 meters reverses illness rapidly and saves lives.
The Golden Altitude Rule
If you have a headache, nausea, or dizziness, do NOT ascend. If symptoms worsen after resting, descend 300–500m immediately. Descent is the only guaranteed cure.
Highland Villages & Wildlife
Indigenous communities and wildlife along the Everest Base Camp trail
Sherpa Heritage & Architecture
Stone-walled houses and agricultural terraces built into the steep hillsides of the Khumbu Valley by the Sherpa community.
Traditional Teahouse Culture
